Journey to design success

From the online store to the customer’s doorstep, a team of dedicated craftsman ensure that each piece of designer furniture meets NOMI’s quality standards before the product is carefully wrapped and sent to its new home.

At the heart of the range, NOMI is about offering beautifully designed and handcrafted furniture pieces that people can customise online and purchase at affordable prices. Crucially, customers can follow each piece – whether it’s a Storyteller’s Chair or a Dove Dining Table – as it goes through the production journey from the workshop to the customer’s doorstep.

An essential part of this journey is manufacturing; where NOMI’s passionate team of craftsmen make each piece using traditional manufacturing techniques. Wanting to keep production local, NOMI settled on a 100-year-old factory in Melbourne to manufacture the range.

“It’s very important that our manufacturers care about our vision, because ultimately they’re a big part of the business and they need to be passionate and invested in the product that we’re creating together,” Archer says.

The range of designer furniture is being made using American Oak, chosen for its tough quality and beautiful deep grain that is still visible, even after painting. Meanwhile, NOMI’s no tools required, flat-pack model – inspired by traditions in Japanese joinery – has further simplified the manufacturing process as well as making assembly easier for customers, using a thoughtful peg, lock and wedge joinery system.

So far, manufacturing NOMI’s products locally enables the team to apply a hands-on approach to production, making sure it takes no more than four weeks for orders to be manufactured and delivered.

For now, customers can follow their order’s journey through frequent online updates, but Grassi explains the NOMI team may look into offshore manufacturing and setting up showrooms to offer better value and allow customers to touch and feel the products.

“Ultimately, behind each NOMI piece there is a team of passionate product designers and craftsman working to make sure each piece of custom furniture is of an outstanding quality that will stand the test of time.”
